'Out of Context' - An exhibition challenging perceptions of West African cultures, curated by Yellowzine at The Horniman Museum

We're proud to announce Out of Context, a new exhibition opening to the public on December 6, this exhibitions reimagines West African culture, identity, and history through the lens of contemporary artists across the West African diaspora.

This exhibition takes inspiration from the Benin ‘bronzes’—cultural artifacts looted during colonial times and displayed in Western institutions, including the Horniman. But who are we to decide what is art? This question is the origin behind Out of Context, it’s a response to the singular way in which cultural items like the Benin Bronzes are often received in the Western world. By framing these objects purely as ‘art,’ Western institutions strip them of the rich cultural contexts they were created to occupy.

Curated by Yellowzine, the exhibition features a diverse array of works from photography by Tamibé Bourdanné, illustrations by Osaze Amadasun, and AI explorations from HUMAN TAKES FLIGHT® by Oreoluwa Ayoade. Each artist brings a distinctive perspective to the conversation, reflecting the depth West African heritage and its global perception.

Tamibé Bourdanné

Photographer Tamibé Bourdanné offers an intimate portrayal of Vodou traditions in the Republic of Benin. His striking images challenge stereotypes about Vodou by highlighting its spiritual depth, humanity, and beauty. Bourdanné’s work serves as a bridge, inviting viewers to connect with a culture often misunderstood and misrepresented.

Osaze Amadasun

Lagos-based illustrator Osaze Amadasun pays tribute to the artistry and symbolism of the ancient Benin Kingdom. His intricate designs, inspired by traditional motifs like the endless knot, weave together past and present. Notable among his works are the Bini Playing Cards, a vibrant reinterpretation of Benin’s classical art. This playful yet profound series reclaims cultural narratives for local Nigerian audiences, offering a touchpoint for engagement with heritage that has been historically inaccessible.

HUMAN TAKES FLIGHT® by Oreoluwa Ayoade

Oreoluwa Ayoade pushes boundaries with HUMAN TAKES FLIGHT®, an experimental series blending AI with West African cultural objects. Using museum descriptions of artifacts as prompts, Ayoade’s images explore how these objects transform when their cultural meanings are stripped away. From ice-sculpture heads to dazzling glass masks, the works question the ways colonial legacies and modern museums ‘artify’ and alienate cultural heritage.

Out of Context runs from December 6 at the Horniman Museum and Gardens, offering an unmissable journey into the evolving story of West African culture.
